Boyle

A river runs through the town centre which also boasts an enormous 12th Century Abbey, several historic houses and castles. Rockingham estate which is also nearby is now a forest park with its wooded islands (32 of them) on the lake including Castle Island with its 1000 year history. Castle Island is Irelands only original walled fortified island and contains the 15th century Mc Dermot tower house.

Boyle is also the site of the Battle of the Curlews 1599 (Irelands Bannockburn) when the local chieftans battled with the Queens forces led by the Earl of Essex whom they completely routed. It was to be the last great victory by the gaelic chieftans before their total defeat at Kinsale in 1603.
